A tomb that was buried thousands of years ago and revered by ancient Romans as the resting place of their city’s mythical founder Romulus has now been rediscovered beneath the Forum in Rome. The underground tomb and the temple built around it are thought to date from the sixth century B. Ancient Romans believed the tomb held the remains of their city’s founder, but the stone sarcophagus that archaeologists just found inside the tomb is empty. The underground temple — called a “hypogeum” in Greek — contains a votive altar that was dedicated to Romulus, said Alfonsina Russo, the director of the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, which oversees the city’s ancient ruins. The entrance to the tomb is hidden in the northwest of the Forum, underneath the building of the “Curia Julia ,” or Senate House, Russo told a news conference in Rome today Feb. The tomb itself would once have been beneath the ” Comitium” — the central meeting place of the ancient city where votes by public assemblies were conducted, she said.

An ancient tomb believed to be the final resting place of the legendary ‘wolf-suckled’ King Romulus – the founder of Rome – has been unveiled to the public for the first time in a series of new images. The finding is near another famous shrine in the Roman Forum, the Lapis Niger, which is an ancient black shrine.
But, unlike Lapis Niger, the proposed tomb of Romulus does not have any inscriptions to indicate who the person buried there was. The Colosseum Archaeological Park, which manages the Forum where the sarcophagus lies, said recent clues all pointed to it being the founder’s tomb. People stand by the access to an ancient tomb thought to belong to Rome’s founder Romulus, who is believed to have killed his brother before founding Rome.
The ancient tomb, which was found containing no bones, is thought to belong to Rome’s founder Romulus, pictured on February Romulus was the legendary founder and first king of Rome – he was in power through the second half of the 8th Century BC and is said to have started some of the earliest Roman institutions and traditions.
Romulus and his twin brother Remus were said to have a notable lineage that can be traced back as far as the Trojan hero Aeneas and Latinus, the mythical founder of the kingdom of Latium. The twins were the sons of Rhea Silvia who was the daughter of Numitor, the former king of Alba Longa – an ancient Latin city in central Italy.

Various traditions attribute the establishment of many of Rome’s oldest legal, political, religious, and social institutions to Romulus and his contemporaries. Although many of these traditions incorporate elements of folklore , and it is not clear to what extent a historical figure underlies the mythical Romulus, the events and institutions ascribed to him were central to the myths surrounding Rome’s origins and cultural traditions.
The myths concerning Romulus involve several distinct episodes and figures: the miraculous birth and youth of Romulus and Remus, his twin brother; Remus’ murder and the founding of Rome; the Rape of the Sabine Women ; the war with the Sabines; Titus Tatius; the establishment of Roman institutions; and the death or apotheosis of Romulus, and succession of Numa Pompilius. Romulus and his twin brother, Remus, were the sons of Rhea Silvia , herself the daughter of Numitor , the former king of Alba Longa.
Through them, the twins are descended from the Trojan hero Aeneas and Latinus , the mythical founder of the kingdom of Latium. Before the twins’ birth, Numitor had been usurped by his brother, Amulius. After seizing the throne, Amulius murdered Numitor’s son, and condemned Rhea to perpetual virginity by consecrating her a Vestal.
Amulius had her imprisoned, and upon the twins’ birth, ordered that they be thrown into the rain-swollen Tiber. Instead of carrying out the king’s orders, his servants left the twins along the riverbank at the foot of Palatine Hill. In the traditional telling of the legend, a she-wolf happened upon the twins, who were at the foot of a fig tree. She suckled and tended them by a cave until they were found by the herdsman Faustulus and his wife, Acca Larentia.
The brothers grew to manhood among the shepherds and hill-folk.
About this item
Romulus and Remus , the legendary founders of Rome. Numitor had been deposed by his younger brother Amulius, who forced Rhea to become one of the Vestal Virgins and thereby vow chastity in order to prevent her from giving birth to potential claimants to the throne. Nevertheless, Rhea bore the twins Romulus and Remus, fathered by the war god Mars.
Amulius ordered the infants drowned in the Tiber River , but the trough in which they were placed floated down the river and came to rest at the site of the future Rome, near the Ficus ruminalis , a sacred fig tree of historical times.
The underground tomb and the temple built around it are thought to date from the sixth century B.C., according to archaeologists. Ancient Romans.
Many of Aeneas decedents reigned this settlement peacefully. When Nimitor was king, his brother Amulius seized the power and dethroned Nimitor, killing his male heirs and forcing his daughter, Rhea Silvia, to become a Vestal Virgin so that she would not provide a male heir to the throne. Nevertheless, Rhea Silvia gave birth to twins, Romulus and Remus, whose father was thought to be Mars, the god of War.
Amulius imprisoned the daughter and condemned the babies to death by drowning in the river Tiber. However, the servant in charge of the task took pity on them and instead placed the twins into a basket and pushed them down the River Tiber. They were safely carried to the area of the seven hills. There, the boys were found by a she-wolf called Lupa who nursed them in her lair in Palatine Hill until they were found by a shepherd and his wife, who raised them as shepherds.
As adults, Romulus and Remus were two natural born leaders and in a fight killed King Amulius and reinstated Nimitor as king of Alba Longa. Seeking to establish their own settlement, Romulus finally built a wall around the Palatine Hill, the location he had chosen for the founding Rome. When seeking the perfect location for their new city, the twins wandered across the seven hills Aventine, Celio, Capitol, Esquiline, Palatine , Quirinal and Viminal.
Remus claimed to have seen six birds, whereas his brother had seen twelve. Even though Romulus had seen more birds, Remus argued that he had seen them first and therefore the city should be built on the Aventine Hill. Meanwhile, Romulus began to build a wall on his hill, which Remus decided to jump over.

What are the key dates in the timeline of Roman history? The story was that the twins Romulus and Remus, sons of the god Mars, were left to die by being put in a basket, set adrift on the river Tiber. The makeshift vessel eventually came ashore at the future site of Rome. Here, the babies were suckled by a she-wolf, then raised by a shepherd. When the twins reached adulthood, Romulus founded a city on the Palatine Hill. When Remus jumped over the furrow that marked where the walls would be built, Romulus killed him.
Yet despite the immense popularity of that divinely ordained — if bloodstained — foundation myth, it has no basis in fact. The name Romulus clearly was made up from that of Rome itself, and archaeology has revealed evidence of settlement on the Palatine Hill as early as 1, BC.
